Sorrentino Vesuvio Winery

THIS POST: Tells you all you need to know about why you should make this vineyard a top stop for wine tasting in Italy, what you can do here, prices, etc.

Dayum. I honestly can’t decide what was best…the wine, the pasta, walking the vines, the view…?

Deciding Where To Go Wine Tasting

Sammy, an old friend of mine had mentioned that she had done this fabulous wine tasting on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Cue adding that to our Italy itinerary. We googled just that and had decided upon a vineyard to visit which seemed quite popular.

However, when we mentioned this to Mario on our day out with Milo Tours (click here to read more about that awesome day out) Mario suggested that he knew of another vineyard which was less touristy and more authentic, if we preferred… so of course we agreed!

Sorrentino Vesuvio Vineyard Tour

Upon arrival at Sorrentino Vesuvio, you may meet Maria Paola, one of the third generation wine-makers from the Sorrentino family. Maria Paola gave us a tour of the many vines at Sorrentino.

We learnt so much about the different varieties and ways of growing the vines. It was truly incredible. I won’t spout off (too much…) about it in this post, but you can learn lots more on their website here.

The views from Sorrentino are incredible. Mount Vesuvius looms at the edge of the winery, and the vines seem to spread almost right up to it’s feet.

You will hear stories of Maria Paola’s Grandmother and how she brought this place to life after the war. You will see huts where soldiers took shelter on this land.

Sorrentino’s vines are rooted deep in history as well as in this beautiful volcanic soil. In these images, you can see Maria Paola explaining to us why this red-leafed varietal is named Piedirosso or “redfeet”. If you hold the leaf in a certain way it resembles the red foot of a bird.

Also pictured here are the gnarly eldest vines on the land which are 200 years old and survived the 1906 eruption of Vesuvius.

One unique aspect of visiting Sorrentino was that there was only a couple of other people walking the vines with us. There wasn’t hoards and hoards of people and therefore it was much more personal and you could feel free to ask questions etc.

About The Wine Tasting

After spending time walking the vines with Maria Paola, we headed inside to the stunning restaurant for wine tasting. It was here that we were to have four courses of wine and a three course meal. I had high hopes for this wine tasting in Italy and boy, did it deliver!

First course was cheese, bruschetta, olives, grilled veg and meats with a poppin fresh Sparkling Lacryma Christi.

This was followed by a beautiful Lacryma Christi rosé (we don’t even usually drink rosé but it was delicious!) a wonderful plate of Pomodoro pasta, a couple of reds and dessert!

After The Wine Tasting

After the wine tasting, you can look around the wine shop which drips with character and old Italian charm. There was a really handy option for wines to be shipped home. Saves you having to carry them around or worry about flying them home.

Price Of The Wine Tasting

It’s hard to believe that you get all of the above for just €30 per person, tour of the vines included! There was no pressure to buy anything from the shop. I will just say though that there is an awesome rack of half bottles which you can buy for €5-€6 so there are some nice options for those that are watching the pennies!

The Dawesy Roundup of Sorrentino Vesuvio

Our trip to Sorrentino was unforgettable, one of the best days out! I highly recommend visiting this beautiful snippet of delicious history set on the slopes of the big V.

If you’re looking for a wine tasting in Italy where you can just sit and get really pissed, this will likely not be the best option for you. Or if you’re looking for a really buzzy place full of people, the same applies.

If however, you’re looking for an authentic family run, third generation vineyard to learn abit about wine, have some fun and delicious food and wine, this is the place for you!
