Best Restaurants in Gallipoli

Gallipoli in Puglia is truly a beautiful place with so much to offer…. stunning beaches, a gorgeous old town and of course…FOOD! Below are (in my opinion), some of the best restaurants in Gallipoli.

1. Gustavo

Address: Gustavo, Braceria Via Gallipoli, 48 73044 Galatone. See their instagram here.

The first on the list is an absolute MUST visit. It is however a taxi journey out of town… the rest of the restaurants listed are all in Gallipoli town but this one is truly incredible and so worth the 15 minute taxi. Gustavo have a set menu where they serve what is in season and whatever main dish the owner has crafted that day, there is no physical menu to browse. Consequently you get what you’re given, which is divine and they catered for vegetarian. The set menu was €30 per person (in September 2023), a glorious carafe of red wine was just €14 and the taxi cost €30 each way from Gallipoli centre.

2. Amu Fish Restaurant

Address: Riviera Armando Diaz, 9, 73014, Gallipoli LE. See their Instagram here:

Unfortunately I didn’t keep prices for this location, I’d say for Gallipoli this was in the medium to expensive range. The restaurant is by the ocean and serves fresh fish and raw fish dishes as well as catering for vegetarians like me. The setting is lovely, full of macrame and lifestyle vibes. Furthermore, if you don’t speak Italian, I’d highly suggest ensuring that you have downloaded the google translate app. Significantly you can take a photo of the menu and convert it into English, and this advice goes for lots of places in Gallipoli. This beautiful little corner of Puglia has not yet succumbed to always offering English menus or waiters that speak English – and that is a breath of fresh air.

3. Osteria Sant’ Angelo

Address: Via de Pace Antonio, 3, 73041 Gallipoli LE. See their instagram here.

Sant’ Angelo is right in the heart of the old town so it’s best to book in advance. Preferably a day or so before or even drop by at the beginning of the night to reserve a table before heading off for an aperitif. Certainly a good array of things on offer, fish, pasta, huge starters! Basically it’s tasty, right in the middle of the old town and has a really friendly waiting team.

4. Laurus Terrace at Palazzo Presta

No 4 of 6 in Best Restaurants in Gallipoli

Address: Via Garibaldi 29, ang, Via G. Presta, 73014 Gallipoli LE. See thier website here.

Although more of a bar than a restaurant, I still feel this deserves a spot amongst this list of best restaurants in Gallipoli. This is a rooftop terrace above the beautiful Palazzo Presta Hotel. Especially fantastic for cocktails, the creations are from the renowned Marco Fabbiano the owner of Laurus Cocktail Experience in Lecce. As well as banging cocktails, the pizza here is outstanding. Furthermore there is also a selection of delicious small plates available. The only downside here I would say is that the service was always very slow. Avoid the fava beans, this dish was not enjoyable! Nonetheless the setting is lovely, there is music and it’s a lovely place to spend an hour or an evening.

5. Antica Trattoria

Address: Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 7, 73014 Gallipoli LE. See their instagram here.

This is one of them classic little restaurants just off one of the main streets in town and looks a little “tourist-trap-y”. However, the food here was decent and although not the best in town it was tasty, cheap and cheerful. Great location for a lunch, for example. Pasta was €10-€15, grilled fish €15 and Aperol Spritz was around €5 I think. A bargain, really! Whilst in Gallipoli you must try Orecchiette, their local type of pasta as seen below in the green sauce. This is a traditional Apuglian pasta especially when served with bitter turnip tops as it is here, and is rarely made with eggs. Often referred to as ‘Cucina Povera’ (‘poor kitchen’) the cuisine in this part of Italy portrays how creative the locals can get with basic ingredients. The locals typically use what the land and the sea gift them and not much more.

6. Baguetteria De Pace

Address: Via Sant’Angelo, 8, 73014 Gallipoli LE. See their instagram here.

Wow, wow, wow. This sandwich shop is another level. Therefore, you have to get one of these whilst in Gallipoli! Freshly baked breads, hand-filled with whatever local delicious toppings you like. I went for a classic burrata, tomatoes and an olive tapenade with fresh leaves and by God. You can either sit and eat in the cute little shop filled with old artefacts or take away. Basically, perfect for a lunch to bring to the beach or, like we did to the airport. They do close for a siesta so make sure you go at lunchtime or in the evening as they are closed mid-afternoon. This is probably the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Don’t miss out!

I hope my list of best restaurants in Gallipoli proves useful to you and that you enjoy the food as much as I did! Feel free to comment with any other restaurant suggestions which I may have missed.
