Wildlife Photography UK: Special Destinations in the UK

Below you will find a list of my favourite wildlife photography UK destinations, hopefully you will find some of them useful or inspiring! Do let me know if you visit any of the below.

Wildlife Destination 1: Long Mynd – The Wild Ponies on the Moors of the Shropshire Hills

My newest wildlife photography destination discovery and subsequently one of my favourites. Witnessing these wild ponies on the misty moors of Shropshire was a truly magical moment. The images turned out to be really special. Walking in the Shropshire hills is beautiful and the Long Mynd (where you will find the ponies) is therefore an unmissable spot. We took the waterfall hiking route for some of the way and that was also fantastic.

Wildlife Destination 2: Horsey Gap – The Seals of Norwich

It is such a lovely day out and it’s always a privilege spending time with these characterful creatures. We must however, always keep at the forefront of our mind the seals welfare, and ensure we do our best not to impact the seals behaviour and comfort. More info on this trip here.

Wildlife Destination 3: Otmoor – Starling Murmurations in Oxford

The starling murmuration is an incredible spectacle to witness. I could not believe my eyes the first time I saw this! It’s something I now enjoy every year as it is honestly breathtaking to see these birds in such huge numbers. Plus, the sound of that many wings is super cool. If you enjoy taking photos, it is absolutely a must-see! More about this trip here.

Wildlife Destination 4: Elmley – Owls

Elmley Nature Reserve is an interesting place to visit and truly great for spotting owls (even for an amatuer like me!) We saw barn owls and short-eared owls when we were visiting. For the most part, you remain in your car and drive up and down a route across the reserve, almost like a car safari for owls. There are other wildlife as well, including hares and lots of other birds.

Wildlife Photography UK Destination 5: The Cairngorms – Reindeer herds in the Highlands

There is a herd of reindeer which roam the Cairngorm highlands and have been roaming free here since 1952. There are daily guided hill walks to visit the herd which was amazing and well worth a visit. More information can be found here.

Wildlife Photography UK Destination 6: Richmond Park – Red Deer Roaming in London

Just a stones throw from central London, Richmond Park is well-known for its beautiful surroundings and famous deer population. You can find both red deer and fallow deer here. Some fantastic photo opportunities arise, but do be aware of safety when moving close to and around the deer.

Wildlife Photography UK Destination 7: Skomer Island – Puffin Colony

What a magical location Skomer Island is. It is (as the name suggests) only accessible by boat which does book up very quickly so you need to be aware of when boat bookings go live for Puffin season. This is usually way in advance of Puffin season, around October or November. You can access the island on daily trips or if you are very lucky, you can actually stay on the island for 2-3 nights in the hostel there. See more information here.

That concludes my list of Wildlife Photography UK destinations. I hope you have found this helpful, and happy shooting!
