Places to Stay in the Black Forest – Äckerhof

Arriving at Äckerhof
I had been doing a lot of research on the Black Forest after I had booked flights to the area and when I found Äckerhof, it just jumped straight out at me. A working organic farm, nestled away high up on a plateau in the Black Forest, Germany? What’s not to love?
My friend Carly and I arrived at Äckerhof during the dark, parked up and wondered down to the main farmhouse area. There were a few guests enjoying some beers with the owners. We were greeted by Emma the resident dog, offered a beer and shown to our podhaus.
It was quite late and we were very hungry, so the owners, Roland and his wife Sandra kindly rustled us up a traditional farm produce hamper with some bread, cheese, pickles and the like. Delicious.
Staying at Äckerhof
This place is straight out of a forest dreamland. We chose to rent one of the three wooden podhauses, which essentially have space for a bed, a mini fridge, a little table and thats pretty much it. Super minimalistic. There are also apartments and a tipi village which look incredible and can house up to 25 guests.
There is a separate block for toilets and showers, that kind of thing. The podhaus also has a handy little solar light outside so you can always see where it is in the dark!
The Location of Äckerhof in The Black Forest
Äckerhof is set pretty much in the middle of the Black Forest which makes it a great place to stay and use as a hub.
As we arrived in the dark, we didn’t appreciate how incredible our surroundings were until the next morning when we opened the pod doors to the most beautiful scenery.
Äckerhof is set in the midst of the forest and is surrounded by many hiking options. We had a short time here and so didn’t get to explore any of the hiking trails. Meadows surround the farm, which is adjoined by extensive forest. It really is breathtaking.
We however, used Äckerhof as more of a base to go and see some other parts of the surrounding areas.
Lake Titisee is an hour and 20 minute drive from Äckerhof and makes a wonderful day out. You can rent pedalo’s here, as well as walk around the lovely little village that adjoins the lake.
Triberg Waterfalls is also a 45 minute drive away. This offers some beautiful hiking and obviously… the waterfalls!
The town of Wolfach, a 20 minute drive away is supposedly a great place to take excursions from. There are also many other local activities including ziplines, horse riding and golf.
Breakfast at Äckerhof was great, set in a little breakfast room with a beautiful balcony to admire the view from. Emma can also offer you her company for Breakfast if she feels like it!

You get the feeling when you are at Äckerhof, that it is a very special place. It’s beautifully serene and peaceful. I’m sure this is one of the most unique and best places to stay in the Black Forest.
I very rarely return to places I have already been, but Äckerhof sits firmly on my list of places I would like to return to. I haven’t stayed anywhere else quite like it. Plus I need to check out them hiking trails!
