Il Carrubo Capri = Bossin’ Italian Country Living

THIS POST: will tell you all you need to know about staying at Il Carrubo. Il Carrubo is the most beautiful country house in Capri, run by a young family trio. Il Carrubo has been a Guesthouse now for around a year and half. So pretty new….but damn do they know what they’re doing.

The Service at Il Carrubo

I absolutely MUST start this post by talking about service. The small family team at Il Carrubo (Alice, Corino and Michele) are the best. Hosts. EVER. Really. EVER. They are truly dedicated to ensuring that their guests relish in their stay here.

I will tell you a little story about how far they will go to try to make their guests happy…

We arrived one extremely rainy Capri lunchtime. To say it was raining is an understatement. It was a tropical bloody storm. Therefore we couldn’t go out and do anything, we were just stuck in our (very nice) room.

So what can you do when there is nothing to do? EAT. And we are very good at that. The team at Il Carrubo can whip up some traditional pastas at the drop of a hat.

They whatsapped us a little menu and we sent back our choices. As the dread was washing over me thinking about heading back into the rain to get the reception/restaurant area to eat, Corino messaged to say that they could bring the food to us!

Our room was a small, self-contained annex about a minutes walk from the reception area. It had a lovely bathroom and a nice big bed where we figured we would eat our pasta.

Well. Low and behold all three of the team arrived outside our private little room in the torrential downpour. They carried in a dining table and chairs, placemats, drinks, glasses, napkins, pasta the lot!

The pasta was divine and I just couldn’t believe they’d gone to all that trouble in the pouring rain to get us a little dining situation set up. They then came back to clear it all away afterwards! Angels.

The Pool and Grounds

The pool at Il Carrubo is amazing, it has a wonderful view of the waters surrounding Capri and there are sun loungers etc to while away the hours on.

We went in September 2020 and were the only ones around the pool. Hence proceeded to have our own Beyonce sing-along day.

Breakfast is also served either around the pool, or under a pretty wisteria pergola, wherever you prefer.

The grounds here are huge and you really get the sense of being away from the hub of it all. Il Carrubo is such a serene, peaceful setting. I think on this island, this is an extremely unique place.

The Food at Il Carrubo

I’d go back just for the food to be fair! The breakfasts?! HOLY JESUS. They will make you almost anything. If they have it, they will make it for you. Bruschetta/eggs/bread/fruit/ cereal and….. cakes.

My oh my, do they make cakes. And I mean make, Alice and Michele bake them all fresh at Il Carrubo. They were even kind enough to share their Nutella tart recipe with us.

Truly some of the best cakes I’ve ever had. They made the error on the first day, of listing all the different kinds of cakes we could try…so of course we asked for one of everything. We then did that every morning after.

Michele will, as mentioned also cook up a mean pasta for around  €10. Here is a snippet of what was offered to us during our stay:

• Pasta with zucchini and parmesan  €10
• Pasta with cherry tomatoes and olives  €10
• Pasta with anchovies, capers, olives and breadcrumbs  €13
• Tomato bruschetta  €5

The Location of Il Carrubo

We really enjoyed the location of Il Carrubo. It is located in the hills of Anacapri, and you can really feel a sense of tranquility in this location.

There is a bus that stops directly outside Il Carrubo and so we used this to get around, go to the Marina and to visit any sites. You can also walk into Anacapri in about 20-25mins.

Il Carrubo suggested a really helpful app called Capri Schedule which will give you all the bus timetables and routes. The Blue Cave (Grotta Azzurra) is very close, a 5 minute drive. I believe you can even walk down from Il Carrubo.

The Dawesy Roundup

I cannot recommend Il Carrubo enough. You must go there immediately. We had three different bookings for Capri and we slowly cancelled the others as we read more reviews of this place and I’m unbelievably glad that we made that choice.

Il Carrubo shaped our entire Capri experience. They suggested places to go for aperitifs, restaurants to eat at and things to do. All of them were fantastic. Capri without Il Carrubo would have been a very different experience. It would have been much less special.
