The Best Pizza In The World?
ADDRESS: L’ANTICA PIZZERIA DA MICHELE, Via Cesare Sersale 1/3, 80139, Naples
Things to Know Before You Go
Preparing for the Best Pizza In The World:
- The pizzas are ginormous. Like double the size of your head. Defo still order one each though. You will want to stuff yourself silly on this stuff
- The prices are outrageous. 5 euros for a huge pizza?!
- Try to avoid the queues! Arrive a little before they open
- Easily reachable on the train
- There is a taxi rank a few metres from the restaurant if you need one afterwards
I had heard the tale of Da Michele’s long before setting foot in Naples. Long regarded as one of (if not THE) best pizzerias in the world, Da Michele’s was at the extreme top of the list of places to go as soon as my friend Nicee and I touched down in Naples.
So. We landed at the airport, then no messing about (well actually quite a lot of messing about trying to book an Uber and then realising there were no cars available…) jumped straight into a cab to head to what would hopefully turn out to be….the best pizza of our lives.
The timings worked out perfectly as I had also heard that if you can get to Michele’s before they open, you stand in good stead of getting in without waiting for hours. We got there about 15/20mins before it opened and there were already around 12 people in front of us.
Whilst waiting patiently for the doors to open, we tried to ignore the INSANELY delicious smell coming from the kitchen and when the doors finally opened, that queue moved pretty dang fast.
We were ushered in the door, track and traced (Yes this visit was during the Coronavirus pandemic) and shown to table 22.
ONCE YOU ARE INSIDE
Now, if you’re looking for a posh restaurant, Da Michele’s is not the one. It’s nothing fancy to look at, there are paper placemats with the (very limited!) menu printed upon it, and your drink of choice (from a similarly limited menu) is served in a plastic throwaway cup.
The white, environment-cluttering kind that always seems to somehow crack and spill shit everywhere. There is an air of no-nonsense from the waiters, and it all feels…well, truly Italian.
The iconic green and white tiled interior, along with multiple framed photographs on the walls, make it difficult to forget Da Michele’s glorious feature in the biographical Julia Roberts film ‘Eat Pray Love’ where Roberts’ character goes in search of the best food (and pizza!) in the world and ultimately finds it at the legendary Michele’s in the very building you’re now sat in!
I felt myself becoming more Elizabeth Gilbert every minute I was in there.
IS IT THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD?!
Now onto the food.
I had been told that there were strictly only two choices of pizza at Da Michele’s…..The Margherita and the Marinara. We visited in Sep/Oct 2020 and this had been upped to four, yet still all the choices revolved around some sort of cheese/tomato/garlic combo.
I tried both the Margherita and the Marinara and I have to say, the Margherita came out wayyyyy on top. It was out of this WORLD good. like. Insanely good. Without the tiniest shadow of a doubt, the best pizza I’ve ever had! So much so, that the day we travelled back to Naples to fly home, we scrapped plans to visit a different pizzeria because we couldn’t bear the thought of it not living up to the high expectations set by Michele’s. Missing out on Michele’s is not an option!
This will go down as one of my most memorable, enjoyable and tasty meals ever. Best pizza in the world? I’d say so. Don’t miss out on your own slice of Julia-Roberts-style, movie-bliss sort of food heaven. Go order a Margherita godammit. Don’t you wanna look this smug?….
